Make failure understandable

A useful system distinguishes between a failed operation and a missing observation. Those states call for different responses.

Recovery is easier when the last working state is saved, changes are small, and a status message explains what can happen next.

Start with a straightforward check. Write down its limits. A little clarity usually helps more than another blinking indicator.
